Programme 09/10:
Sacred Topologies, Profane Morphologies. Lisbon and Los Angeles: between the Spiritual and the Carnivalesque.

The theme of this year evolves around the complexity of sacred and profane spaces. It questions those spaces not just in experiential, programmatic and symbolic ways, but also in terms of its geometric dimension: sacred topologies or profane morphologies?

The first field trip will be short and focused on a site in Lisbon, located in the vicinity of the famous Jerónimos Monastery. Here the unit is invited to design and build the lost façade of an old chapel of which the exterior and interior were demolished in the 18th century Lisbon earthquake. Albeit being a spiritual space of historic importance, the chapel’s presence today is reduced, while being used as a small cultural centre.

This project is a real project, set to be on site in the summer of 2010.
