Soft, Sensual, Synthetic: Green Paradigms in the Postdigital Era Unit 20 has formed a particular interest in crossing boundaries of the traditional architectural practice, envisioning innovative conditions in design. By looking into advances within a wide range of sciences and art - bio-medics, small-scale intelligence, material engineering and digital aesthetics - students are supported to develop an individual research field. The projects, on various scales, will develop an architecture that is built up by many different strata of applied scientific knowledge, software based morphologies, micro-worlds and intelligent environments, as well as local and global policies, traditions and cultures. Most of the contemporary and fashionable «green» concepts are the collectively acceptable mainstream leftovers or technological implementations of avant-garde thoughts, which can be traced back to the oil crisis in the seventies and the subsequent emergence of a green movement. The radical and holistic thoughts of the beginning were most notably and globally voiced in 1992 as Agenda 21 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro. However, the roots of such movement can be traced back to the 19th century with the formation of biology as a scientific subject coining the now commonly used words habitat, milieu and ecology. Being in the teens of the 21st century challenges us to look for new alternatives and visionary thoughts that uncover and re-integrate a relationship which has been lost in translation: man-architecture-nature. Modernity tried to formulate a reality that was independent from nature. Architecture was raised on pilotis and sought refuge in abstract art. But in the recent past, nature has regained its place as a quintessential reference for architecture, thus seeking for a different design approach, one that is soft, sensual and more synthetic. Natural complexity and exuberance succeeded classical simplicity and reduction. Instead of opposition, man-architecture-nature is now seen as a more intertwined formation of an overall environmental/cultural/architectural manifold. More than anything, it reflects our postdigital condition in which architecture aims at a more human dimension in digital design. It focuses on the body as an inside-out generative tool rather than architecture being generated from outside. Ultimately, this raises new questions about how the binary thinking of in/out spaces dissolves into the gradient from public space to private sphere; more fundamentally, how architecture is designed out of and within the bubbling pool of the irreducible wealth of culture, nature and human life. For each individual research, students will be asked to associate themselves with external institutes or agencies, such as UCL Synthetic Biology, UCL Energy Institute, UCL Algae, Greenpeace UK, The European Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES), BioBE / University of Oregon, SymbioticA / University of Western Australia. The new book by ORTLOS entitled Architecture of the Networks – the Emergence of Networked Design and Thinking is focused on virtual prototype, virtual enterprise, and virtual environment. This unique publication, the result of a continuing unusual creative collaboration between ORTLOS and graphic design legend David Carson, presents theories and projects, dating from 2005 to 2010.

Dr. Marjan Colletti is co-founder of the London-based architecture studio marcosandmarjan, which combines experimental practice, research, theory and teaching. He is a senior lecturer at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL (Unit 20) and Westminster University (DS10) in London. He has previously been guest professor at various European, US and Asian institutions, i.e UCLA Los Angeles, UT Arlington Texas, Innsbruck University, RCA etc. He is the guest-editor of AD Architectural Design Exuberance: New Virtuosity in Contemporary Architecture (Wiley), co-editor of Research Projects 2009 (Bartlett UCL), co-author of marcosandmarjan: Interfaces/Intrafaces (SpringerWienNewYork), and author of 2&1/2D Twoandahalf Dimensionality (Bucher Hohenems) and the PhD by Architectural Design thesis Digital Poetics (Bartlett UCL). He has also exhibited in approx. 60 exhibition worldwide, and is regularly invited as guest critic and lecturer internationally.

Exuberant and Sublime Flesh brings together architectural proposals for contemporary spiritual and sacred spaces developed by students in Unit 20 at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL London, and Innsbruck University, Austria. A collection of architectural projects for Istanbul, Rome, Turin, Munich, Lisbon, Havana and Miami explores a unique sense of exuberance and sacredness, promoting the digital and aspiring at the sublime. The complex nature of these themes is articulated in a series of exquisite 2D laser cut and 3D rapid prototyped models that express a new ornamental, spatial and technological approach and also reconsidered a religious and cultural dimension for contemporary architecture design.

Sacred spaces have long been the apotheosis of architectural genius; exuberant buildings created by some of the greatest names in architectural history in which stylistic and spatial innovations are revealed and new technologies tested and developed. The theory and theology of sacred spaces holds renewed interest in the current historic moment where religious faith is under intense social and political scrutiny. Sublime spaces are primarily associated with experiences bound up in the powers of nature, but as nature has changed throughout the ages, so has our sense of the sublime. Expressing grand passions and utopian ideas, this exhibit illuminates the emotional involvement between a contemporary (digitally savvy) designer and the user of contemporary spiritual and sacred spaces.

'under construction' is this year's official austrian pavilion at the 12th international architecture biennale in venice. Commissioned by American architect Eric Owen Moss, the first foreign architect to be appointed for the design of the Austrian Pavilion in the history of the biennale, the exhibition explores the country's export and import of architecture by presenting the works of internationally practicing Austrian architects
as well as the projects of international architects who are building in Austria.

"Those outside the architectural profession often perceive a building to be brilliant for the aesthetic experience it offers. And yet bizarrely, from the advent of modernism, architects have invented a multitude of strategies to absolve themselves from making visual judgments.
     The prevailing architecture of the 20th century with its impersonal nature resulted with a consistent reduction of the complexity of our profession where its cultural, artistic, poetic, or metaphysic aspects were questioned too often while rationality, economy, utility and technologies were always deployed.
     Objectifying the design process, enhancing a cerebral input and reducing the intuitive personal moves, especially involving the eye as a tool of judgment (the ‘I’ and the ‘eye’) and not resorting to it as a secret weapon, led in time to a lack of confidence in how much intellectual depth can be captured by intuitive architectural imagery.
     The modern usage of ‘aesthetics’ mean taste or ‘sense’ of beauty and that tied the term to a personal attitude. Eeventually, architecture with no personal visual discrimination while commenting on a broader, collective cultural spectrum, deprives people of an emotional environment: since if there is no emotional input there is no architecture that touches people’s emotions.

Now more than ever before it is our creative role to bring a new beauty to cities and to substitute alienation with widening the pallet of emotions."

Neo-Baroque Aesthetics: Art, Architecture, Idology - A critical evaluation of the concept of 'neo-baroque'

Theme of the conference: ‘Baroque’ and ‘neo-baroque’ tend to be conflated in popular usage. To say something is ‘baroque’ usually means it is highly or overly complicated, or obscure, or both – and implies that this quality is dazzling or confusing. This sounds like a criticism: people don’t usually praise obscurity or confusion. ‘Two clarities make a blur’ is a statement by the architect Peter Eisenman – and indicates (perhaps obscurely and confusingly) the interest that recent designers have shown in using complex patterns and reflective materials of various kinds. These are most readily visible in recent or contemporary ‘signature’ architecture by auteurs such as Eisenman, Daniel Libeskind and Frank Gehry. Generally, however, these buildings are praised as the work of geniuses and not dismissed as obscure or confusing. This session attempts to deal with some of the basic questions use of the terms ‘baroque’ and ‘neo-baroque’ raises in relation to contemporary culture. For instance, are these terms descriptive or analytical, or perhaps a confusing mixture of both? Can ‘baroque’ one minute be a good thing (the signature building) and the next a bad thing? What, then, are the bad baroque items in contemporary culture if the term still extends a judgemental hold? In the visual realm, the term has been used to describe buildings, paintings and sculptures, but might it be tenable to call some TV programmes, films and computer games ‘baroque’ too?
Two other questions will be central. Firstly, what is the difference between ‘baroque’ and ‘neo-‘baroque’? This will depend partly on our views of the historical definition of the former term and its relation to other terms in the traditional art-historical syntagm that runs ‘renaissance – baroque – rococo – neo-classicism’ and beyond on to our modernity. Secondly, if items in contemporary culture are in some useful ways accounted for as ‘baroque’ or ‘neo-baroque’ then is this not also a matter of the culture ‘as a whole’ in terms of, for instance, its modes of production, or operative ideologies, or patterns of consumption? Perhaps if in our discussion of these issues we create two or more blurs these might, in turn, help to generate some clarity.

Rendering Speculations, coordinated by Ricardo de Ostos (AA Inter 3/NaJa-DeOstos) and Tobias Klein (AA First Year/Horhizon), is an AA event in which seven invited guests, from a variety of different fields including architecture, conceptual art, video gaming and interface design, will discuss the topic of speculative visualisation and virtual design. Highlighting a variety of disciplines and approaches, the event seeks to locate architecture as a magnifying lens through which digital visions and speculations are imagined.
Navigating through CG film sets, a digital life painting performance, augmented reality strategies, narrative scenarios, experimental drawings and political projects, the concept of speculation will be discussed as an inventive design methodology. In an age where borders between physical and virtual environments are constantly shifting, the symposium looks to stimulate a debate on how architecture can explore emerging mediums and assist in the creation of new visions that we imagine, aspire and experience in the years to come.

Marjan named one of the invited exhibitors in the Austrian Pavilion, curated by Eric O. Moss, at this year's 12th International Architectural Biennale, which will be held from August 29 to November 21 2010 at the Giardini and at the Arsenale (preview August 26, 27 and 28 2010), and in various other venues in Venice.

Together with Marjan Colletti, he co-founded marcosandmarjan, a London-based atelier that combines experimental design research with practice and teaching of architecture.
Marjan Colletti is an architect, educator, researcher and author. He runs postgraduate design studios Unit 20 at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL and DS10 at the University of Westminster in London.

Laura Allen and Mark Smout are senior lecturers at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL where they are the Undergraduate Program Director and Postgraduate Thesis Director, respectively, and together they teach a Postgraduate Design Unit. Their teaching promotes the design unit as an architectural laboratory that merges with design and research practice. In particular the teaching focuses on landscape, innovative and appropriated technologies, and interpretations of environmental knowledge.

This ongoing series of symposia aims to discuss processes and practices of spatial investigation and design in relation to contemporary drawing practice.
In the 21st century digital interfaces increasingly inform our understanding of art, architecture and design. In the past 20 years the viral spread of computing hardware and software has re-defined the protocols and procedures of the thinking/drawing process. Recent editing, 3D modelling and projection technology has changed the immersive possibilities of the drawing space and opened up new avenues for time-based drawing. Many artists and designers are enthusiastic about the further potential of this technology for an expanded digital drawing practice, while others resist and continue to champion a more craft-based or hybrid approach.
This symposium provides a chance to discuss contemporary methodologies and approaches from across disciplines.

Marjan Colletti's work attempts to bridge the gap between architectural theory and the built environment, as due to its narrative potential, ‘original digitality’ ought to be defined and fashioned both in design, as well as in text. The endeavour is to establish on various platforms - research, education and practice - a debate in which experimentation, technology and progress do not exclude emotions, traditions and identity.

Here, digital research is not to be understood as merely addressing parametric requirements, and digital design not as simply being referred to as form generation. Instead, they both arise from an approximative and dynamic setup of experience and experimentation, method and serendipity. Criticising pure parametric and algorithmic computerised architecture in favour of a poetic digital avant-garde, equally developed through 3D software and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC), Rapid Protoyping (RP), Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies, Marjan ventures into grasping and predicting (de·sign, pro·ject) the approximately exact properties - hitherto less theorised than their counterpart: parameters - of the computer itself and the resulting computer-aided architectural design (CAAD).

Besides the politics of Digital Poetics, the talk will also discuss EXUBERANCE - New Virtuosity in Contemporary Digital Architecture, the return of ornamentation, plus the inclusive agenda of DigitAlia, the 'other' digital practice.

Intro
The studio of marcosandmarjan is interested in crossing boundaries of the traditional architectural practice, developing innovative conditions in architecture. By looking into advances in a wide range of fields students are encouraged to develop a portfolio that reflects their individual research agenda. This includes digital poetics and fabrication, biotechnology (or better known as neoplasmatic design) and small-scaled intelligence, material engineering, environment, new architectural and urban typologies, sacred and sublime spaces. We believe in architecture as a system build up by many different strata, scientific knowledge, micro-worlds and objects.

Theme
In a time where food is becoming an increasingly limited resource and thus a main concern in world politics, societies in the developed world are challenged to reconsider their modes of production and consumption in both small and large scales. It is not a coincidence that France and the UK are amongst a group of countries that have set Food security as their main target in terms of research and investment for many years to come, and others are now following. It is also part of our mainstream debate how our contemporary food chain in affecting on a biological and cultural level our diet and health. Further, there is an extraordinary repercussion of modern production/engineered food on the environment as a whole.

As a result, architects are forced to rethink their design when it gets to some of our most basic needs: eating, cooking, storing, growing and harvesting. They are confronted with an extraordinary chain that has directly implications on the future design of our homes and cities.

Course Objectives
Domestic Scale (1st LA trip - marcosandmarjan)
Following an inside-out approach, students will be asked to work on a particular aspect of domesticity (day-night-wet-dry...) and related environmental conditions (temperature control/waste/water...). In a second stage, the proposal will expand and focus on private/semi-private, with particular attention given to neo-ecological inter-/intrafaces. First iterations of ideas will be translated into components and prototypes. A first crit will follow.

Meanwhile, contacts with other UCLA departments and LA companies, as well as international institutions such as TIS, Italy will be established. Students will work out their projects over the gap-weeks, and will get online tutorials.

Architectural scale I (2nd LA trip - marcos)
The next stage of the program will ask students to develop previous ideas into built components and prototypes (with an interdisciplinary approach - in collaboration with another department). Students will expand their projects into a larger scale, defining brief and context for a small scale building. Great consideration will be given to the conceptual/formal/contextual development of the initial ideas into a more complex architectural scenario (narratives/circulation/program/tectonics...). An Intermediate pinup will follow.

Architectural scale II (3rd LA trip - marjan)
This stage will require further developments of the public building and also progressive developments of digital models and fabrication techniques. Higher degree of resolution of the public building typology, with particular attention being given to the strategies of spatial/programmatic layout, but also to atmospherics and interiorities. Students will work out their projects over the gap-weeks, and will get online tutorials. An Intermediate pinup will follow.

Urban scale (4th LA trip - marcosandmarjan)
Parallel extrapolations of the architectural scale and interpolations of each individual project are proposed into an urban scale. Students will be asked to develop a self-sufficient, small-scale 'Agro-polis' – a new peripheral urban settlement or agricultural town to be chosen in California. The aim is for a final rendition of projects, and fabrication of conjoint model. Final crit and portfolio submission will end the term.

Dr. Marjan Colletti is an architect, an architectural educator, researcher, and co-principal of 'marcosandmarjan design limited' in London. Born in Bolzano/Bozen Italy in 1972, he graduated with distinction under the supervision of Prof. Giencke from the Innsbruck University in Austria in 1997, where he also taught design and construction. After having worked for Giencke&Co. in Graz, and after having registered as an architect in Italy he moved to London. He graduated with distinction under the supervision of Prof. Sir Peter Cook and Arch. Reisner with a Master’s of Architectural Design from the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL in 1999, where he afterwards completed a MPhil/PhD by Architectural Design programme entitled Digital Poetics: An Enquiry into the Properties of ‘Mimetic Intrafaces’ and the ‘Twoandahalf Dimensionality’ of Computer-Aided Architectural Design under the supervision of Prof. Hill and Prof. Tabor.

He is a P/T Lecturer in architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL (ranking as 4th best university in the world), where he has run degree Unit 5 and now diploma Unit 20 (best unit in show [2000], 2006 and 2007) at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL, and P/T Senior Lecturer at Westminster University in London (diploma studio DS10). He was Guest Lecturer at the Kent Institute of Art and Design, Digital Augmentation Course tutor at the Royal College of Art London, and joint instructor of Digital Architecture Workshops in Taichung, Taiwan and in Oslo, Norway. During the summer semester 2007 he replaced Prof. Thorsen at the Institut für Experimentelle Architektur.Hochbau, Innsbruck University Austria as Visiting Professor in Construction and Architectural Design and acting Head of Institute. In Winter 2010 he was visiting professoro at UCLA in Los Angeles and at UT Arlington Texas.

His own work, his students’ work and of his studio marcosandmarjan, which he co-founded in 2000 with Marcos Cruz, has been widely published and exhibited. The approx. 50 exhibitions in Europe, Brazil and Asia include the Venice Architectural Biennale 2004 and 2006 and the iCP ‘ORIENTierung’ solo exhibitions in 2005 that accompany the marcosandmarjan: Interfaces/Intrafaces monograph by SpringerWienNewYork (ISBN 3-211-25232-0). He has also curated Bartlett exhibitions in Florence, Prague, Bratislava and Kosice. His studio work includes a won competition for a 180.000m2 entertainment complex in front of the gates of the Summer Palace in Beijing, and the built pavilions and general layout for the 2005 Lisbon Book Fair, visited by 2 million people in 2 weeks.

By looking into advances within a wide range of manufacturing technologies and working methodologies, I expect student work to result from an open-minded and creative interpretation of such processes, simultaneously pursuing a synthetic model of design that convolutes the technological with the poetic, the visionary with the historic, as well as the ornamental and the tectonic. In fact, the nature of contemporary architectural design, as I understand it, goes beyond the functions of opulence and intricacy, of technique and simulation, of module and optimisation. It invokes something ranking above notions of beauty, style, and elegance - it evokes the sublime, the blissful and the mysterious even within the digital domain. The most successful students develop their own architectural language that enables their projects to achieve the elusive synthesis of typological and topological criteria, of programme and poetic phenomena, of strategy and phenomenology, of structure and style.

In basic terms, if my approach towards design, theory and teaching was to be summarised with one word, it would be ‘convolution’, as the term conveys the various notions of blur (pushing the boundaries of the discipline), overlap (layering of contexts, ideas, technologies…) and interference (interdisciplinarity and multitasking). Convolution establishes a debate and a methodology in which experimentation, technology and progress do not exclude emotions, traditions and identity. It bridges the gap between architectural theory and the built environment. Convolution understands research as not sole programmatic requirements, and design as not mere form generation. It entails an organic spatial and strategic vision that includes the significance of atmospherics and bodily experience, in conjunction with the student’s technological and poetic awareness. Rather than extrapolating singularities (of an architectural language) into multiplicities and modulations (of geometry and tectonic) via parametric cohesion, convolution intrapolates multiplicities and modulations (of geometry and tectonic) into singularity (of an architectural language) via convoluted cohesion. Under these circumstances, I teach the student to spiral away from the apparently unquestioned and rather predictable version of what can be understood as the contemporary emergence of a new ‘digital modernism’: the unspecified whitewash (or often just ‘greywash’) of 3D surfaces, the universal Sachlichkeit [objectiveness] of parametric design techniques, and the mechanistic concept of the computer as a purely generative utensil. In turn, they are asked to challenge such approaches, envisioning experimental, and thus unpredictable conditions in design that are the result of the student’s eccentric, ‘spiritual’, phenomenological and humanistic, yet informed understanding of architecture.

My research, design and teaching agendas are positioned within the field of digital architecture, despite of my criticisms towards pure parametric and algorithmic computerised architecture. Instead I favour a poetic digital avant-garde that achieves the synthesis of (technological) parameters and (poetic) properties, implying an approach that develops from inside out, involving experiential qualities, inhabitation and use. Rather than following the structural ‘truthful’ efficiency of the Gothic and its parametric revival, phenomena of convolution are intrinsically associated with a sense of formal, structural and spatial complexity, borrowing from a plethora of Baroque binary conditions, such as the dichotomy of rational and empirical thinking, along with the morphing of classical architectural semantics into playful theatrical tectonics and typologies. Convolution thus also involves the body in a variety of (digital and analogue) arguments that aim for the synthesis of techniques, technics and technologies, and the performance (understood both as task and as staging) of architecture. Techniques are here understood as process and method, technics as skills and functions, and technologies as scientific knowledge and applications.

My aim is to widen the vocabulary of digital architecture. Consequently I believe that due to its narrative potential, ‘original digitality’ ought to be defined and fashioned both in design (projects), as well as in text (theory). Hence I favour a poetic digital avant-garde, equally developed through 3D software and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC), Rapid Protoyping (RP), Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies. I consider digital design and fabrication to be of great potential for the development of truly contemporary design, which is nonetheless embedded within a wider contextual architectural conversation.
